According to a Pew survey, 75% of the people looking for medical information, don't know the source of the information once they find. In other words, the sources could be good ones or their motives could be suspect.

Despite that, families can and do take advantage of the enormous wealth of information on the internet. There are many excellent an reputable medical sites out there, but if you are just starting off on a search, here are ten we recommend.

1) WEBMD
An excellent place to start any investigation. It has current info as well a diagnostic tools.

2) CENTER FOR DISEASE CONTROL
The Center for Disease Control is the place for current information on communicable diseases and public health issues. The recent Swine Flu is a an example, but they also have lots of info on other topics.

3) EVERYDAYHEALTH.COM
The name says it all.

4) WRONGDIAGNOSIS.COM
Perhaps mis-titled, but this is a great site to track down symptoms and diagnosis.

5) MAYOCLINIC.COM
Like WebMD, a good starting point with current info.

6) NLM.NIH.GOV
This is the national Library of Medicine. Patient friendly advice, but a little bulky at time. till the info is excellent.

7) HOSPITALCOMPARE.HHS.GOV
This site compares hospitals & specialities. A good place to check out if you are considering a stay or a procedure.

8) MLANET.ORG/RESOURCES/USERGUIDE.HTML
Lousy title, but stands from Medical Library Association and like many of the sites here, has a ton of info.

9) TALKINGQUALITY.GOV/COMPENDIUM
It issues reports cards on hospitals and health plans.

10) MYRCHMEDICUS.COM
Got the 2008 Best Overall medical site and is considered one of the best resources fro patients, but the site is geared towards professionals, i.e. doctors.

11) WOMENS HEALTH.com
Federal government source with info on mammograms, eating disorders and more.

12) UPTODATE.com
An online community where over 4000 clinicians talk with patients. Subscription needed, but worth it.
